What is your Christianity Worth?

April 14, 201213 Comments

We are in a society marked by pluralism, as our President stated we are no longer just a Christian nation.  Voddie Baucham said, and I paraphrase, to our society Christianity is that old couch on the curb! To many Christianity has had its opportunity, and it did not work, and so now it does not have a place as being tenable in our society.  We see this as Judeo-Christian ethics have been dethroned and tossed to the way side. It’s more acceptable to say that’s “good karma”, over “the bible says”!  In a society where Christianity is no longer given preference it will have to prove itself!  We will have to show what Christianity is worth.

As our society becomes more pluralistic, questions of Christianity’s ability will be more frequent, really they are here now.  Questions that ask, is your Christianity real and how so?  Does Christianity really work? How is it working for you?  In a pluralistic society Christians will have to answer the effectiveness of Christianity for themselves, before recommending it for someone else.

Our answers will have to be firmly “I know”, “I have experienced”, and “this is what it is”.  academia is great but to a person who has a system of belief already, the theological explanation of Jesus abiding in you, will impress him as much as snow does Eskimos!  The average Joe or jane, wants real, big words don’t impress them!  Our answers will have to be as real as the breath we breathe, they will have to be heart-felt in us, before they’ll affect another’s heart.  We will have actually had to experience something of Christianity to tell of Christianity.  Our reality of our Christianity will have to go past the covers of our bibles.

Our standard of Christianity will have to rise from “church attendance” and “being nice”, to actually following Christ.  We will have to be the “living epistles” Paul wrote about  (2 Co 3:2), we will have to know and have experienced the God of the bible.

Christianity is not new to pluralism, but rather it was birthed in pluralism.  Remember Paul’s sermon to the men and women in Athens (Acts 17:16-32), remember Paul’s troubles with the masters of the girl who had a spirit of divination (Acts 16:16:19).  Remember that God’s presence in the Ark of the Covenant, toppled Dagon, the Philistines God.  Remember that to each land and city the Apostles went there was already some form of pagan worship there, let alone the Jews they had to contend with.  Christianity was birthed in pluralism, as an unknown worship to a little known God by a forsaken Savior, but through God’s Spirit it conquered.  Will Christianity conquer through you?

  1. This is very well put. I believe as we reach “center stage” due to the climate around us. Christianity will need to ring forth through us individually, and we need to reflect on how we will ring. What can we do? How do I step forth in the name of Christ?

I think that as individuals and congregations we will have to make the decision to stand with and for Christ. After all that is what being a disciple of Jesus, or a follower of Jesus is about. Everyone can step forward in the name of Christ by continuing to believe and living by faith (Heb 10:38, Joh 6:29). God is still looking to use women like yourself to advance His kingdom. The question below very well might be the ultimate question to answer.

I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” (Luk 18:8)

Thanks for reading and commenting, God’s love, peace and grace to you.

Man, this post hit the nail on its head!

Christianity is the only thing becoming intolerable in our “tolerant” society because it claims exclusivity. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. The world doesn’t like that and doesn’t want to hear about that. Ignorance and apathy; they don’t really know what Christianity is about and they don’t really care either. Everybody just wants everybody else to be okay, go with the flow, follow your heart, live for the here and now, to keep your faith to yourself and to maybe have just a little bit of Christianity if it helps you be more moral but to not be extreme/radical because that would be “pushing our religious views” on other people.

You are right, we need to stand firm with our words but, like you also said, it needs to be MORE than that. Christianity doesn’t work as a religion; it only works when it’s authentic, when we seek God with all of our hearts. You’re right, we need to *actually* follow Christ. Our actions and reactions alone, our daily lives as we walk in the Spirit and keep our eyes locked like lasers upon Jesus, is what actually shines light in the midst of darkness.

Thanks for sharing this GREAT post!! 🙂
