There really is something there…it’s God!

On the Outside Looking in

So you’ve walked into a “worship” service at a church. You listened to the music, took a casual look around, saw some people sitting down, others were lifting their hands in the air and gazing at the ceiling. Still others are singing, and yet others are crying. In the front at what’s called the altar, there are people on their knees crying, hands lifted, and looking off into the distance. Obviously something is happening, but you’re not certain what’s going on, or if anything is going on at all. You wonder why they’re crying and staring off into the distance!? Are the people crying and on their knees just too emotional? You’ve been down this road before, they say their worshipping God, but you wonder if there is really anything there at all.

For the first 21 years of my life, I on various different Sundays found myself in the scenario I outlined above. I looked around, as you probably have or will do and I too used to wonder, is there really anything there at all? Is there something too all these people crying, and staring off into the distance! Who or what is causing this? I’m not going to try to prove to you, that what you have seen is real worship. I’m not going to attempt to prove to you that God exists. I will simply answer the question. What appears to be nothing is God, He’s there!

God is there!

“God is Spirit, and those that worship Him must worship in Spirit and Truth.” John 4:24

What’s there? God is there! One thing He’s Spirit and that means you can’t put your hands or eyes on God. Trying to grasp God like you got to know your wife or neighbor is not going to happen. God is spirit, that’s it. We’re souls in physical bodies. Touch and sight are the primary means we use to interact with people. We see them and say, “Hi”! Then we shake hands or give a hug. That’s person to person contact, sight, and touch. Great for getting to know your neighbor, not going to happen if you want to get to know God. God is a spirit, no man has ever put eyes on God, and no man will ever shake his hand. You can’t see and touch spirit. While you can’t see God, you can see the effects of God affecting people, and that’s what you see during worship. You see the effects of an invincible, infinite, very present and real God affecting people who are worshiping in spirit and in truth.

If God’s really there then…!

If God is really there then He should __________, you fill in the blank. I know, we want God to make the first move. We want Him to show up or should I dare say, we want Him to prove Himself! This sounds like a reasonable request right? Well the first problem is that God has moved first, His goodness fills the earth. The heavens and earth that He made declares His handiwork, and where do you think you came from? Second, it’s a demand that’s filled with pride! How so? Because we don’t want to take God for who and what He is and respond accordingly! We really want Him to come to us on our terms. We want to demand God to show up just the way we want. So then we can reason with Him, and work out our terms of worship and obedience. Our generation stands afar off from God, saying “come to us!” Our pride permeates the atmosphere!

From Speculation to Experience

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psa 46:10)

God is a self-disclosing God; He reveals himself to us. However, it’s at His own terms, He won’t be demanded, He won’t show up for scrutiny, and examination. If you doubt this, read the response he gave to Job, read how he waited, listened to complaint after complaint then entered and challenged Job to reason with Him! He comes not to be questioned by His creation, but for His creation to recognize that He is God. Be still and know that He is God

The word God has been used so much, I think that it needs to be defined again. God: an infinite, all-powerful, all-knowing being; who came into existence without cause, and cannot cease to be.  This is the God we push off and attempt to demand.  Have we forgotten, or have we not known, that His weakness is stronger than our greatest strength. Yet we stand in His mercy, we stand because of His love, even when our arrogance merits destruction.

“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” (Jas 4:6)

God comes to us, but not to the arrogant, not to the self-made wise guy. He comes to those who are of a contrite spirit, those who have concluded that this world is not enough, and have ceased to use the things of this world to fill the place that God seeks to fill in their lives. We have to humble ourselves, before an almighty God, knowing that He fills everyplace and yet is unseen. Knowing that while God is untouchable, He makes contact with us. Is there really anything there? Yes, its God!

This past Sunday, I got to experience that “something there.” I felt God’s presence all over Faith Chapel. God is there! God is “there,” when I am home, praising, worshiping and praying to Him. God is “there” when I am in the car, and I call out to Him. God is “there”, when I am in the bathroom, the library, the bedroom, the…. wherever! I want to thank you for sharing and REMINDING us that there is “something there” and that “Something” is God!!! I just want to add that the “there” does not have to be a worship service, but it should be. For those people that trick themselves into believing they don’t have to go to church. True, God is and can be every where. BUT, it is something special when you meet Him in his place of worship and let Him called to preach, preach His word to you after He has been “there” with you! Thanks for this blog topic. A blessing indeed. God is There! and He is always waiting to me you, me and anybody else “there” too.
