The Cross: Could there have been another way?

In the lesson “FTC:He became sin, who knew no sin”, the idea of could there have been another way besides the cross came to mind.   Could God have provided redemption for mankind, justice for Himself, and defeated Satan, some other way?  We know the Cross is the greatest display of love, but how necessary was it?  Could God have spared His Son the punishment and just showed us love by getting rid of the idea of justice?  Unfortunately, fortunately there could not have been another way, the Cross is God’s way for redemption, justice, defeating Satan and displaying His love, read on and I’ll show you why.

Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. (Rom 6:6)

The Cross crucifies the fallen nature of man. There are three examples in the Old Testament that shows the problem God has and had with the fallen, sin enslaved nature; the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah, and the Wilderness wanderings. In each of these instances God pronounced Judgment on people and thousands died, but yet the sin enslaved nature that caused the problem survived.  The law even made it worst because sin was aroused through by the law.  The cross is where God was able to deal a deathblow to the old fallen nature in us, through one death, He causes the death of the sinful nature in all who come to Him.  The cross is a ladder which provides a way for humanity to crawl up from the depths of the Fall. (2 Cor 5:14, Gal 2:20, Rom 6:1-6 )

For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. (Rom 8:2)

All rules are meant to be broken!  That’s probably how we live down here, but that is not how God lives.  God created the law of sin and death and he meant for it to not be broken, all while knowing it would.   God is the only one who is perfect, and who can without respect of persons demand total compliance, and render punishment to all who do not comply.  In our world, crooks look for loopholes, computer programmers create “work-arounds”, the average Joe expects exceptions, and broker hook-ups.   The Cross of Calvary is the only bypass that God has provided for mankind.  Every other way seeks to pervert the paths of justice, and skirt the law that called for death.  After all who would sentence themselves to death?  Furthermore, “workarounds” would leave God lacking the appeasement that only the blood of Jesus can provide; He is our propitiation.   The cross of Christ is where punishment was rendered and God’s wrath was appeased. (Rom 6:23)

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
(Col 1:13)

Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. (Col 2:15)

There is yet another problem, his name is Satan.  He and his fallen angels were cast down to earth; defeated, they could not return to heaven to attempt more mayhem, so on earth they stayed wreaking havoc on mankind.  This is the element of the cross that gets overlooked, how could God strip Satan of the grip of fear and torment he held over people?  How could God deliver those who chose Him from Satan’s dominion?  He had already defeated Satan in heaven, when it was angel against angel, but now with mankind in between, how could God defeat the devil and provide deliverance for mankind?   Jesus’ life was a ransom; He died for us to be free, from the life of bondage of fear and death.  Jesus is the one who took the keys of death of from Satan, and became a life giving Spirit. Without Jesus’ death the ransom would not have been paid, and we would not have the option to be free from Satan’s reign of fear. (Heb 2:14-15, Mar 10:45)

I’ve heard people sum up the Gospel by saying, its “Jesus”, that’s good, but let’s not forget the cross.  Jesus’ death on the cross, while a very harsh reality does for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves; appease God’s wrath, render Him justice, crucify the old sinful nature and defeat Satan again.  The cross appears to be the only way for God to have done all of this.
