Jesus Christ…2 Covenants…1 Son

December 9, 20110 Comments

Abraham and David were both given covenants in the Old Testament, have you ever wondered what happened to them.  Did God just get frustrated with the Old Testament, forget His promises and like Franklin D. Roosevelt offer a New Deal or rather a New Covenant?  Without further reading we all know God is not capricious.  Jesus came, dealt a death-blow to sin and much more.

Two Covenants

Abraham was from what we know a regular man, in a pagan land, until God showed up and told him to leave that land, and go to a land that God would show Him. (Genesis 12)  Abraham went even though he didn’t know where this land was or what it would be like, He just obeyed God.  Abraham found the promise land and much more.  God told Abraham that in Him all the families of the earth would be blessed.  This blessing was much larger than Abraham’s request of an heir to his family (Gen 15).  Its fulfillment would take more than the eventual coming of Isaac.

“And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” (Gen 12:3)

David was just a young ruddy shepherd boy, before being anointed as the next King of Israel.   He walked with his sheep in the fields of his land, valiantly warding off bears and lions.  During the time of being out with his sheep, while no one was seemingly looking, God saw that David had a heart after His own.  Read what Solomon said about David after his death:

“And Solomon said You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. (1 Kings 3:6 emphasis added)

David was anointed King of Israel and reigned for 40 years before he died.  God promised to David that his throne would be established forever and he would not lack a man on his throne. (1 kings 2:45,9:5 2 Sam 7:16 ) The covenant and promises God gave to David was far-reaching, extending beyond what Solomon’s life could provide, its fulfillment needed more than Solomon.

“But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD forever.” (1 King 2:45)

One Son

Jesus is the son of David and the son of Abraham… (Matt 1:1)

Both of the covenants given to Abraham and David were not only great and precious, but they were farther reaching than Isacc’s or Solomon’s life.  Isaac in his lifetime was not able to bless all the families of the earth.  Solomon lived, but he’s not on the throne today! Jesus Christ is the son of David and the Son Abraham, the seed by which all the families of the earth can be blessed.  The true and eternal King, and rightful heir to the throne of David.  Jesus is the continuity, the continuance of the old to the new, he’s how you and I receive our blessing.  We are joint heirs to reign with Jesus, because Jesus is the promised heir to reign on David’s throne, the eternal throne that would always exist.  God was not capricious, He didn’t forget His word to David and Abraham.  There were two covenants given, and there was one Son that came to fulfill them both.  Jesus the son of God, the son of Abraham, the son of David.
